Projects: Institutional Buildings

In March 2004, Sigma Engineered Solutions, PC was commissioned to renovate three dormitories on the campus of Caswell Center in Kinston. Approximately 120,000 sq ft across the three buildings was upfitted with modern HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems. In addition the project includes significant renovations to bathing and kitchen areas giving the spaces a much less institutional feel. With help from Schenkel Shultz Architecture, the buildings were renovated sequentially; the last building is due for occupancy in April 2008.

City of Danville, VA commissioned Sigma to replace existing antiquated chillers at the Social Services building and the library building. After reviewing existing conditions, Sigma recommended installation of an air-cooled packaged chiller for the Social SErvices building; and an air-cooled split unit with compressors in the mechanical room and condenser on the roof for the library building. Each chiller has an approximate capacity of 100 tons.

Diamondview is a 5-story shell overlooking the Durham Athletic Park. Design work included electrical, fire protection and plumbing systems for the building shell, as well as many tenant upfits.

Revitalization of 6 buildings totaling 31,500 SF in a city block in Rocky Mount, NC.

New 40,000 sq ft senior citizens community center and adult day-care for the county of Durham. This building was designed to double as an emergency shelter; and has a back-up generator and a commercial kitchen. Design work included fire protection, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and telecommunications systems.

Systems design for renovation of 3-story building including new HVAC and plumbing systems. Designed to meet the City of Durham’s resolution to achieve LEED certification on all new and renovation projects.

Complete gut and renovation of 18,000 sq ft dormitory/cottage for clients. Design work included mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems.

This project includes installation of one 400-ton water-cooled chiller and one 600-ton water-cooled chiller; cooling tower; circulating pumps; and support system for campus chilled water loop. A feasibility study was also conducted to connect the two chilled water loops together.

Sigma Engineered Solutions, PC is providing Engineering Services to renovate Playmakers Theater at UNC Chapel Hill.

Robertson House will be a 2-story 11,600 SF structure with LEEDS Platinum Certification located on the site of Hill Hall Annex, and will serve as the UNC-CH campus home of the Robertson Scholars Program.

Systems design for new Wake Forest Town Hall municipal building - 45,000 SF with LEED certification requirements.
